The British Institute, Amman

Located within walking distance to the libraries of the American Institute for Oriental Research (ACOR) and the German Protestant Institute of Archaeology (GPIA), as well as the University of Jordan, the library of the British Institute in Amman is available to foreign and local researchers Sundays to Thursdays from 8:30am to 5:00pm.

Currently our collection covers all aspects of studies with in the Levant, with particular emphasis on:

  • Jordan (all periods of archaeology, art, architecture, social and cultural history)

  • Prehistoric, Greek, Hellenistic and Roman periods of archaeology in Cyprus, Lebanon, Israel/Palestine, Syria, and to a lesser extent the countries bordering the Levant

  • General archaeology and the archaeology of the Near East

  • Archaeological theory and science-based archaeology

  • Conservation and restoration techniques

  • Cultural heritage management 

  • Geography and Social Anthropology.

  • Social Sciences, Critical Theory and Gender Studies

  • Refugee Studies.

Library user have ready access to the library catalogue The library is reference only. Guests of the Institute have 24-hour access to the library; however no books should be removed to the hostel without prior permission, and the map room can only be used by arrangement with a member of staff.

The library is open to anyone wishing to use the library for reference and photocopying purposes. If they would like to use other facilities, such as internet or computer facilities, they must become a CBRL member.
